Leading passenger car brands in Brazil by market share 2022

In 2022, Americam vehicle manufacturer General Motors was the best-selling car brand in Brazil, accounting for nearly 16.8 percent of car sales. Italian automaker Fiat ranked second, with a share of 15.5 percent of new passenger cars sold in the South American country that year.

Global automotive heavyweight

In terms of annual new registrations, Brazil ranks as the sixth-largest automobile market in the world. In 2022, sales of new passenger cars in the country stood at just under 1.58 million units. This Portuguese-speaking nation is likewise among the top automobile-producing countries globally. Within Latin America, Brazil ranks second in terms of overall motor vehicle production, but it takes the lead when it comes to passenger cars production. Meanwhile, the regional leader, Mexico, focuses on light commercial vehicles.

Something old, something new

With more than 38 million automobiles in circulation in Brazil, new vehicles represent only a small share of its annual passenger car sales. In 2022, for instance, used car sales came close to 8.7 million units. When it comes to Brazilians’ favorite used car brands, the market reflects that of new automobiles: Volkswagen has consistently topped the ranking in recent years, claiming a 20.20 percent market share in 2022. GM followed in a close second, also with a share around 19.62 percent.
