Zinfandel, characterized by its rich flavor and dark red color, is the most expensive type of wine in the United States according to 2015 data. In that year, the average price of a 750-milliliter bottle of zinfandel cost 10.11 U.S. dollars.
Most Popular Types of Wine
For those who have not taken a wine appreciation class or conducted extensive research on the subject, the different types of wine available in U.S. grocery stores can be overwhelming and the terminology used to describe and categorize wine can be confusing. American consumers seem to gravitate towards a few select types of wine, specifically merlot, chardonnay, and cabernet. Around 23 percent of American over the age of 21 had purchased a bottle of merlot in 2018.
U.S. Wine Consumption
The per capita consumption of wine in the United States is on the rise. In 2005, the average American resident consumed around 2.34 gallons of wine over the course of the year, and by 2016 this figure had increased to nearly three galloons. However, the source indicated that this amount would be higher if the sample were isolated to only include Americans of legal drinking age. Wine consumption also varies across geographical regions in the United States, with the consumers in the New England and Mid-Atlantic states buying wine the most frequently.
