Producing wineries in the U.S. 2009-2021

In 2020, there were a total of over 11,000 wineries in the United States producing wine. Since 2009, the number of wineries in the country has grown by over 50 percent.

Wine country

California is without question America’s leading state when it comes to wine production. In 2020, the state of California contained a total of over 4,700 wineries. In other words, approximately half of all wineries within the United States are located in California. In 2019, the state produced an estimated 588 million gallons of bottled wine. The state of New York ranked second that year, producing just over 31 million gallons.

U.S. vine bearing area

The total area used for grape vines in the United States amounted to about 408 thousand hectares in 2019, a decrease compared to previous years. The United States’ share of the global vine bearing area stood at just 5.5 percent in 2019.
