The Indian film industry worldwide – additional information
Hindi and other regional language films proved popular with audiences from North America, the United Kingdom and South Africa in 2012. In the past, Indian cinema has been recognized by the Academy Awards in America, which are often considered the highest honour in the film industry worldwide. Academy Awards have been presented to the Indian film industry in categories including costume design, composing, sound editing and writing.
The International Indian Film Academy Awards or IIFA Awards honor the excellence of professionals in Bollywood and Indian film. Since its formation in 2000, the awards have been held in a different country each year. The United Kingdom, South Africa, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Canada and the United States have all hosted the awards. The number of visitors to the IIFA awards have been documented from 2010 to 2014. The awards attracted the highest number of visitors in 2011 with a total of 56 thousand, when they were held in Toronto, Canada. In 2014 however, visitor numbers to the awards in Tampa Bay, Florida dropped to 30 thousand.
The IIFA awards have a direct economic impact on the host cities each year. In 2011, in Toronto, direct visitor spending amounted to 24 million U.S. dollars. Despite a drop in visitor numbers to the 2014 awards, visitor spending remained healthy as vistors contributed 19.9 million U.S. dollars to Tamp Bay Florida.
Of course, Indian film fans also have a direct economic impact domestically when they choose to spend their hard-earned money with trips to the theatre. The number of cinema admissions in India has remained steady from 2009 when there were 2.78 billion cinema admissions to 2013 when there were 2.7 billion cinema admissions.
