This statistic shows the offense history and drug and alcohol use of U.S. state prisoners as of 1999, by whether they were abused before admission to prison. As of 1999, close to 19 percent of male inmates who had been abused in their life, had committed a sexual assault. About 7 percent of male inmates who were never abused had a sexual assault on their record.
