This table shows a list of mobile devices with a screen size between 4.5 and 6.5 inches, commonly referred to as phablets (not all devices on the market have been included). The largest smartphone/ tablet hybrid as of August 2013 was the Sony Galaxy Mega with a screen size of 6.3 inches.
Additional Information
It is unknown exactly where the term “phablet” originated, although it is a term that has been circulating frequently in recent times. There is also some discrepancy as to the exact definition of what constitutes a phablet device, although it can generally be described as a smartphone with a screen size of between 4.5/5 inches at least, up to 6.5/6.9 inches. Essentially, a phablet blurs the line between a regular smartphone and a tablet device due to its excessive size as a handheld device. A few of the most popular and reputable phablet devices to date include the Samsung Galaxy Note, Huawei’s Ascend Mate and the HTC Droid DNA.
There are a range of current forecasts that anticipate a significant boom in shipments of these large screen devices in the years to come, while other forecasts offer a more modest estimation for the future. Some industry experts have remained skeptical however, one reason being the impracticality of such large phones and the reality that they often don’t fit in traditional clothing pockets. However, only time will tell if this latest phase will take off to the extent that many have anticipated.
