A light-emitting diode (LED) is an electronic semiconductor light source which is generally used in digital displays and lamps. Currently, light-emitting diodes are among the most energy-efficient light sources in the world. More and more countries are getting close to phasing out conventional bulbs in favor of more energy-efficient light sources such as light-emitting diodes and organic light-emitting diodes.

In contrast to most traditional light sources, LEDs can be very small, light up quickly, and have a relatively long useful life. Although LEDs have many technical advantages, they can be slightly more expensive than other technologies. It is estimated that in 2020, LED lamps with a cool white color cost on average approximately 35 U.S. cents per kilolumen. However, its extended lifetime provides a longer-term cost savings due to reduced maintenance costs. For an interior downlight lamp, nearly half of the costs are associated with the mechanical, thermal, and electrical aspects.

In a typical LED package in the United States, both packaging and wafer processing accounted for approximately a quarter of the total cost. In the near future, it is estimated that 17 percent of the LED luminaire market share will be dedicated to downlights and eight percent to street lights.

The global LED lighting market is growing steadily according to recent statistics. The market for light-emitting diodes has increased by over 10 billion U.S. dollars from 2013 to 2015. Additionally, light-emitting diodes are expected to achieve a 61 percent penetration of the global lighting market by 2020.
