Sources of Medicare revenue in 2021
Medicare relies on revenue from a variety of sources in order to provide medical coverage to millions of U.S. residents. As of 2021 approximately 46 percent of the Medicare revenues were generated from general revenue of the program. Comparatively, 34 percent of the revenues were generated from payroll taxes.
