In 2023, the CPI in U.S. cities averaged at 304.7. However, the CPI for the New York-Newark-Jersey City metropolitan area amounted to about 321.99. Prices in New York City were significantly higher than the U.S. average. Nonetheless, the San Diego-Carlsbad area ranked first with a CPI of 362.02.

The data represents U.S. city annual averages. The base period was 1982-84=100. A consumer price index (CPI) measures changes in the price level of consumer goods and services purchased by households. The CPI is defined by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics as "a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services."
