Revenue of Allergan plc by segment 2015-2019

The global pharmaceutical company Allergan has three distinct operating segments: U.S. specialized therapeutics, U.S. general medicine, and international. The U.S. specialized therapeutics segment has generated the most revenues since 2017. Allergan was acquired by rival AbbVie in a deal valued at 63 billion U.S. dollars in May 2020.

Revenues boosted by general medicines

Allergan reported record revenues of approximately 16 billion U.S. dollars in 2019, 42 percent of which was generated by its U.S. specialized therapeutics segment. However, the increase in net revenues between 2018 and 2019 was primarily due to strong growth in the U.S. general medicine segment, particularly sales focused on the central nervous system and women’s health products. Sales of Vraylar, a medication used to treat adults living with bipolar disorder, increased by around 75 percent in 2019.

Specialty sales decline despite best efforts of Botox

Allergan’s U.S. specialized therapeutics segment focuses on the sale of branded products within the United States in key therapeutic areas. In 2019, medical aesthetics and eye care were the company’s two leading areas, and Botox Therapeutic was the branded product that generated the most revenue. In the United States, Allergan made approximately 2.7 billion U.S. dollars from the combined sales of Botox Cosmetics and Therapeutics.
