United States: DIY sales 2023, by store type

In 2023, DIY lumberyard sales in the United States amounted to just under 138 billion U.S. dollars, an increase compared to the previous year. Home centers generated approximately one and a half times that amount. Total sales of all three store types combined amounted to roughly 545 billion U.S. dollars.

The DIY market growth

DIY sales have been steadily growing, and are expected to continue rising in the next years. By 2027, the sales of hardware stores alone are estimated to reach over 69 billion U.S. dollars. The same trend can be predicted for both home centers and lumberyards, with each amounting to 379 and 154 billion U.S. dollars respectively.

Major players

The Home Depot and Lowe’s are the largest home improvement retailers in the country, with the former’s sales amounting to over 157 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. Although considerably smaller in terms of sales and revenue, Ace Hardware was the leading home improvement store chain in the U.S. in 2023 according to consumer satisfaction.
