United States: DIY sales 2024, by store type
In 2024, DIY lumberyard sales in the United States amounted to just under 133 billion U.S. dollars. Home centers generated approximately two and a half times that amount. Total sales of all three store types combined amounted to roughly 526 billion U.S. dollars.
The DIY market growth
DIY sales have been steadily growing, and are expected to continue rising in the next years. By 2028, the sales of hardware stores alone are estimated to reach over 73 billion U.S. dollars. The same trend can be predicted for both home centers and lumberyards, with each amounting to 366 and 150 billion U.S. dollars respectively.
Major players
The Home Depot and Lowe’s are the largest home improvement retailers in the country, with the former’s sales amounting to over 153 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. Although considerably smaller in terms of sales and revenue, Menards was the leading home improvement store chain in the U.S. in 2024 according to consumer satisfaction.
