Supplementary notes

Family income is total income earned by all family members who have been living in the household for at least one year and are at least 14 years old. The term "income" is broad, including income earned through employment, business, farming, rent, pensions, dividends, interest, social security, and any other money income.

The U.S. census Bureau defines a family as a group of two people or more related by birth, marriage, or adoption, and residing together. This is different from a household, which includes all the people who occupy a household (related and unrelated), and as such, household median income and family median income require two different measures. Median household income in the United States by state can be accessed here.
