Global consumption of packed beverages 2023, by beverage type

In 2023, packed water consumption exceeded 500 billion liters, making it the most consumed packed beverage type in the world. Packed alcoholic beverages and milk and diary ranked second and third, respectively.

Bottled water in North America

In 2020, the country to consume the highest amounts of bottled water per capita was Mexico: the average Mexican person drank just over 74 gallons of bottled water. That same year, people in the United States drank 45 gallons less on average. As of 2022, regular bottled water accounted for 25 percent of beverage consumption in the United States. Value-added water was a lot less popular, only being consumed by just over one percent of Americans.

Retail sales of water in Canada

While there were several bottled water varieties in Canada in 2018, such as functional water and still flavored water, the traditional still kind remained by far the preferred option. Retail sales for still bottled water reached almost three billion U.S. dollars, while all other varieties remained under the 500-million-dollar mark.
