The Youth Crime Severity Index (Youth CSI) takes into account both the volume and the seriousness of youth crime. In the calculation of the Youth CSI, each youth offence is assigned a weight, derived from average sentences handed down by criminal courts. The more serious the average sentence, the higher the weight for that offence. As a result, more serious offences have a greater impact on changes in the index. All police-reported youth Criminal Code offences are included in the Youth CSI. A youth is defined here as a person 12 to 17 years of age. Adapted from Statistics Canada, statcan.gc.ca, 2001 to 2022.
