Total number of breweries in the United States 2012-2022

In 2022, there were 9,709 breweries located in the United States. The number of beer brewing companies has been increasing steadily each year since 2012. Breweries are categorized as craft, large craft, and other non-craft breweries.

Beer production

Total beer production numbers have decreased in the United States over the past few decades. In 2021, the country produced an estimated 181 million barrels of beer, a decrease of about 14 million compared to 2010. Beer production was at its peak in 1990 when over 200 million barrels were filled.

Craft beer production

While total U.S. beer production has declined, craft beer’s share of the U.S. beer production volume has grown in recent years. Between 2013 and 2019, the country’s craft beer volume share had increased by an estimated six percent. The coronavirus pandemic in 2020 changed this dynamic with craft beer's production share dipping to 12.2 percent but rebounded to 13.1 percent in 2021 and again increased by 0.1 percent in 2022. In 2022, there were various types of beer companies that make craft beer, including microbreweries, brewpubs and, most commonly, regional craft breweries.
