Carbon dioxide emissions from natural gas in the United States are projected to decrease slighlty in the coming decades, reaching an estimated 1.61 billion metric tons (GtCO₂) by 2050. This would represent a decline of some 6.8 percent in comparison to 2022 levels. Furthermore, emissions from coal use are also expected to continue dropping over the following decades as the U.S. phases out this fuel source.
Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy sector in the United States from 2022 to 2050, by fuel
(in million metric tons)
* Petroleum emissions include carbon dioxide from international bunker fuels.
** Other includes emissions from geothermal power and non-biogenic emissions from municipal waste.
The Annual Energy Outlook includes a series of projections referred to as cases. The data in this statistic belongs to the Reference case, which assumes no new policy or laws over the modeled time horizon.
