The Super Bowl is one of the highlights of the sporting calendar in the United States, with sports fans coming together to celebrate the final showdown in the NFL season. In 2022, around 15 percent of respondents to a survey stated that they were planning to throw a Super Bowl party. However, some 60 percent stated that they did not plan to throw or attend a Super Bowl party. This unusually high figure can be attributed to the coronavirus pandemic, which has prevented people gathering in large numbers for parties and events.
Super spending on Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is takes place annually on the first Sunday of February. The end of season showdown between the NFL’s two best teams has a big impact on the retail industry in the United States: consumers spend around 14.6 billion U.S. dollars across Super Bowl weekend. In 2022, adults are expected to spend an average of almost 79 U.S. dollars on Super Bowl Sunday, with a large share of respondents planning to purchase food and beverages for the big game.
It’s more than just a game
The Super Bowl is one of the cultural events of the year - people not only tune in for the game but also for the halftime show and special commercials. TV viewership of the Super Bowl has declined in recent years, but the average cost of a 30-second advert during the game has increased since 2010 and reached 5.6 million U.S. dollars in 2021.
