The coal mining industry employed 4,722 people in Wyoming in 2022, and all of them worked in surface mines. Since 2011, the minority of the employees in the state worked in underground mines. During the period in consideration, coal-mining employment in the state oscillated with a trend of decline, peaking at just over seven thousand employees in 2011.
