In 2023, the U.S. recorded nearly 3.5 billion U.S. bus passenger trips. Bus passenger numbers had been recovering since bus use collapsed during the COVID-19 pandemic, but as of 2023, figures had not yet reached pre-pandemic levels. Passenger numbers had already been on a downward trend prior to the pandemic, falling since around 2013.

Unlinked passenger trips are defined as the number of passengers who board public transportation vehicles. Passengers are counted each time they board vehicles no matter how many vehicles they use to travel from their origin to their destination.
Data before 2022 was taken from previous editions of the report.
