In 2006, some 216 billion U.S. dollars of brand name medication was sold in the United States. By 2021, this amount increased to some 482 billion dollars.

Statistic includes non-discounted spending. All figures are rounded and were calculated based on IQVIA data. Includes prescriptions and insulins dispensed by chain and independent pharmacies, food store pharmacies, mail service pharmacies, and long-term
care facilities. Spending figures also include sales into hospitals, clinics, and other institutional settings.
Values before 2012 were taken from the GPhA 2010 Annual Report and were not restated.
