In 2018, the federal funds spent to finance local public transport (ÖPNV) and regional trains (SPNV) in Germany amounted to approximately 7.8 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of around 5.4 percent. During the same year, most of the federal regionalization funds spent (78 percent) went to regional train service orders.
The regionalization funds (Regionalisierungsmittel) are capital that the German federal government makes available to the states each year to finance local public transport and regional trains.
