In 2023, U.S. class one railroads transported a total of 24.37 million carloads. This constituted a decrease of around 2.3 percent compared to 2023. A class I railroad in the U.S. is defined as a large freight railroad company and is classified based on an operating revenue of more than $550 million. Smaller railroads are classed as either class II or class III.
