The share of pedestrian fatalities in the number of total road traffic fatalities in the United States has been slowly increasing in the past years, rising from 11 percent in 2006 to 17 percent in 2021. This figure has remained stable at 17 percent between 2018 and 2021.

Pedestrians are defined as any person on foot, walking, running, jogging, hiking, sitting or lying down who are involved in a motor vehicle traffic crash. A traffic crash is an incident that involves one or more vehicles where at least one vehicle is in-transport and the crash originates on a public traffic way.
