As of December 31, 2021, ships with a capacity of 7,500 to 9,999 TEUs had a combined capacity of over 4.2 million TEUs. The largest types of container vessel—the ones with a capacity between 18,000 and 24,000 TEUs—had a total capacity of around three million TEUs.

The existing chartered fleet takes into account ships chartered out by non-operating owners to operators, thus it does not take into account 94 ships for 197,253 TEU which are normally owned by an owner-operator but chartered out to another operator, either for operational reasons (operational exchanges within alliances or partnerships) or because they are surplus to their owners’ requirements.
