As of February 3, 2024, Kohl's Corporation operated 1,174 stores across the United States, making it the leading department store based on the number of locations. Macy's followed with 718 stores.
In February 2021, Belk, a private department store chain based in North Carolina, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The retailer presented its reorganization plan and in a matter of days, it won the court's approval. The reorganization plan eliminated 450 million U.S. dollars in debt and the company's 290 stores remained intact.
