Wood fuel consumption in the United States grew to 1.9 quadrillion British thermal units in 2023. This was down from two quadrillion British thermal units consumed the previous year. Wood fuel such as firewood, wood chips and pellets is the oldest fuel type known and used by humans. Due to the relatively short period of time needed for trees to grow back, wood is considered a renewable energy source.
