Detroit Tigers - additional information
The professional baseball team Detroit Tigers was established as a charter member in Detroit in 1894 as part of the Western League, which was later reorganized into today’s American League (AL), part of Major League Baseball (MLB). Unlike many other teams that have relocated and /or renamed, the Tigers have managed to remain the oldest one-name, one-city franchise in the AL. The Tigers, which are also sometimes nicknamed The Tigs, The Bengals or The Motor City Kitties have won four World Series championship titles, in 1935, 1945, 1968, and 1984 and 11 American League Pennants, in 1907, 1908, 1909, 1934, 1935, 1940, 1945, 1968, 1984, 2006, and 2012.
The Tigers’ most famous player, considered by some to be the best in the sport’s history, is outfielder Ty Cobb, who played with the team between 1905 and 1926. During his 22 seasons with the Detroit team, he won a record 12 batting titles, more than any other baseball player ever since. His lifetime batting average is .367, the highest in MLB history and he is also the first person to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Detroit Tigers are owned by Michael Ilitch. who bought the franchise for 82 Million U.S. dollars in 1992.
