This statistic gives outlook figures on the total consumption of renewable energy in the U.S. from 2009 to 2035. It is estimated that a total of 420 trillion British thermal units of residential renewable energy will be consumed in the year 2030.
U.S. renewable energy consumption in 2009 with projections to 2035, by sector (in trillion British thermal units per year)*
* Residential sector renewable energy includes wood used for residential heating.
Commercial sector renewable energy excludes ethanol. Includes commercial sector consumption of wood and wood waste, landfill gas, municipal waste, and other biomass for combined heat and power. Industrial sector renewable energy includes consumption of energy produced from hydroelectric, wood and wood waste, municipal waste, and other biomass sources. Excludes ethanol blends in motor gasoline. Electric power sector renewable energy includes conventional hydroelectric, geothermal wood and wood waste, biogenic municipal waste, other biomass, wind, photovoltaic, and solar thermal sources. Excludes net electricity imports. ** Estimates in the EIA reference case projection, a business-as-usual trend estimate, given known technology and technological and demographic trends. *** The industrial sector includes energy for combined heat and power plants, except those whose primary business is to sell electricity, or electricity and heat, to the public. The electric power sector includes consumption of energy by electricity-only and combined heat and power plants whose primary business is to sell electricity, or electricity and heat, to the public. Includes small power producers and exempt wholesale generators.
