Production of hot rolled long steel products in North America 2000-2022

In the year 2022, North America produced approximately 39.5 million metric tons of hot-rolled long steel products, which was the second-highest production level recorded in the last 22 years. During the period given, North America's hot-rolled long steel production fluctuated and reached its peak of 39.9 million metric tons in the year 2021.

Global crude steel production

In 2022, the global crude steel production amounted to 1.9 billion metric tons, representing a four percent decrease compared to the previous year’s production volume. 2022 wasn’t an easy year for the steel industry. Ongoing effects of the coronavirus pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war-related energy and raw material crises, and, importantly, decreased overall demand severely affected the global crude steel-producing companies.

China is the market leader

China was the global leader in crude steel production in 2022, accounting for 54 percent of global output. Compared to the other regions, this was by far the largest share in production. Moreover, China's Baowu Group was the world's largest steel producer in 2022. The company manufactured around 131.8 million metric tons of crude steel that year, which was around 63 million metric tons more than ArcelorMittal, the second-largest company.
