The share of U.S. petroleum imports from OPEC countries amounted to 15.7 percent in 2023, an increase when compared to the previous year. In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic and resulting lower transportation fuel demand discouraged many oil traders and resulted in oil benchmarks falling to record lows. OPEC imports have decreased as the U.S. has become more reliant on neighboring Canada for oil imports.
