This statistics shows the death rate for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease among the U.S. population in 2013, by age group and gender. In that year, there were 0.4 male HIV deaths in the age between 15 and 24 years per 100,000 inhabitants in the United States.
HIV disease death rate in the U.S. in 2013, by age and gender
(per 100,000 resident population)
The race groups, white, black, Asian or Pacific Islander, and American Indian or Alaska Native, include persons of Hispanic and non-Hispanic origin. Persons of Hispanic origin may be of any race. Death rates for the American Indian or Alaska Native and Asian or Pacific Islander populations are known to be underestimated.
Categories for the coding and classification of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease were introduced in the United States in 1987. For the period 1987-1998, underlying cause of death was coded according to the 9th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).
Starting with 1999 data, cause of death is coded according to ICD-10. To estimate change between 1998 and 1999, compare the 1999 rate with the comparability-modified rate for 1998.
All rates are age-adjusted. Age-adjusted rates are calculated using the year 2000 standard population. Prior to 2003, age-adjusted rates were calculated using standard million proportions based on rounded population numbers. Starting with 2003 data, unrounded population numbers are used to calculate age-adjusted rates.
* Rates based on fewer than 20 deaths are considered unreliable and are not shown.
