The timeline shows the consumption of alternative fuels by U.S. highway vehicles from 1992 to 2008. In 2008, 62.46 million gasoline-equivalent gallons of 85 percent ethanol were consumed by highway vehicles in the U.S.
Consumption of alternative fuels* by U.S. highway vehicles from 1992 to 2008
(in 1,000 gasoline-equivalent gallons)
Beginning with 2003 data, the methodology used to develop the estimates of alternative fueled vehicles (AFVs) in use and alternate transportation fuel consumption were changed. The data reflect this methodology.
Data for 85% methanol not available between 2003 and 2008.
Data for neat methanol not available between 2004 and 2008.
Data for 95 percent ethanol not available between 2004 and 2008.
Data for hydrogen not available between 1992 and 2002.
Data for other fuels not available between 1992 and 2002.
* Alternative fuels include liquefied petroleum gases, compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, 85 percent methanol, neat methanol, 85 percent ethanol, 95 percent ethanol, electricity, hydrogen and other fuels.
** The remaining portion of 85 percent methanol, 85 percent ethanol, and 95 percent ethanol fuels is gasoline. Consumption data include the gasoline part of the fuel.
*** Excludes gasoline-electric hybrids.
