At over 11,000 metric tons of uranium, Illinois was ranked first in 2021 among all states in the United States for the largest volume of spent nuclear fuel stored in nuclear plant sites. Pennsylvania ranked second that year, at over 8,000 metric tons of used commercial nuclear fuel being stored.
Used or spent nuclear fuel refers to uranium fuel rods that are too depleted to sustain a nuclear reaction. The used nuclear fuel can be recycled.
