In 2024, Delhi recorded 68 percent of monitored days when PM2.5 levels exceeded India's daily National Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) 24-hour standard of 60 micrograms per cubic meter of air (μg/m3). This was the highest proportion of PM2.5 daily exceedances among India's most populated cities that year. In comparison, just two percent of monitored days exceeded PM2.5 NAAQS in Chennai. However, India's daily NAAQS for PM2.5 is far less strict than the World Health Organization air quality guideline of 15 μg/m3.
