In 2023, one flight out of four departing from Europe was operated by the main European low-cost carriers, easyJet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air, while this share was 20.5 percent in 2019. In 2023, 33 percent of departing flights in Europe were operated by European legacy carriers.

Aer Lingus, Air France, Alitalia, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Finnair, Iberia Airlines, KLM, LOT- Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines and TAP Portugal are defined as the legacy carriers. Delta Airlines, Emirates Airlines, Etihad Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines are defined as the selected third country carriers are. The remaining carriers are under the category other.
