In the first seven months of 2024, Chinese chip companies imported almost 130 billion yuan-worth of machines for semiconductor device or integrated chip manufacturing. Overall, the Chinese semiconductor industry imported around 164 billion yuan in machinery but exported only around four billion U.S. dollars in semiconductor equipment. It illustrated that despite increased efforts from the Chinese government to build a domestic chip industry, companies still heavily relied on imported equipment. While the country has made significant improvements in manufacturing capabilities, it still lags in the semiconductor equipment domain.
