In 2023, an estimated 183 kilotons of Australia's unwanted clothes were diverted from landfill to be reused or recycled domestically or outside of Australia. Around 10 kilotons of unwanted clothing items were recycled domestically, while around 25 kilotons of unwanted clothing items were recycled overseas. The remaining unwanted clothing items were reused, which included the sales of secondhand garments. Nonetheless, the volume of clothing diverted was smaller than the volume of clothing going to landfill that year.
