In 2023, an estimated 732 million pieces of Australia's unwanted clothes were diverted from landfill to be reused or recycled domestically or outside of Australia. Around 40 million unwanted clothing items were recycled domestically, while around 100 million unwanted clothing garments were recycled overseas. The remaining unwanted clothing items were reused, which included the sales of secondhand garments. Nonetheless, the quantity of clothing diverted was smaller than the quantity of clothing going to landfill that year.
