Cryptocurrency ownership in Finland shows a notable generational divide, with younger age groups more likely to invest in digital assets. As of April 2024, 13 percent of Finns aged 30 to 39 years own some form of cryptocurrency, closely followed by 12 percent of those aged 18 to 29 years. This trend highlights the growing acceptance of digital currencies among younger generations, while older age groups remain more hesitant to adopt this new financial technology.

Growing market and adoption

The cryptocurrency market in Finland is expected to growth in the coming years. Revenue in the cryptocurrency segment of the fintech market is forecast to increase by 25.71 percent between 2024 and 2028, reaching 203.4 million euros. This growth is accompanied by a projected rise in the penetration rate, which is expected to increase by 3.6 percentage points during the same period, reaching 34.26 percent by 2028. These trends suggest a continued expansion of the cryptocurrency market in Finland, with more individuals likely to engage with digital assets in the future.

Exchange preferences and new investors

Finnish cryptocurrency investors show a preference for both international and domestic exchange platforms. As of April 2024, Binance leads the Finnish market with a 33 percent share among crypto investors in Finland, closely followed by the Finnish exchange Coinmotion at 31 percent. While the cryptocurrency market continues to grow, the influx of new investors has slowed compared to previous years. In early 2024, around two percent of Finns bought cryptocurrencies for the first time, a significant decrease from the peak of 18 percent in 2020.
