Foreign direct investment (FDI) refers to the net inflows of investment aimed at acquiring a lasting management interest (ten percent or more of voting stock) in an enterprise operating in a country other than that of the investor. FDI includes the sum of equity capital, reinvested earnings, other long-term capital, and short-term capital, as recorded in the balance of payments. This data series reflects net inflows (new investments minus disinvestment) from foreign investors into the reporting economy, expressed as a percentage of GDP.
