The largest source of global urban ambient PM2.5 pollution is motor vehicles, with a share of 25 percent. Household wood and coal burning for cooking and heating is the second-largest contributor to emissions of these harmful pollutants. Meanwhile, just under 20 percent of PM2.5 pollution comes from natural sources such as dust, sea salt, and wildfires. Ambient particulate matter pollution causes millions of deaths every year around the world.
