In 2023, 1,365 people in Japan lost their nationality. Over the past decade, the highest number was recorded in 2022, with 3,385 people losing their citizenship. Japan currently does not permit dual citizenship for adults. If Japanese citizens are granted the nationality of another country, they automatically lose their Japanese citizenship. They are then required to report the loss of their nationality to Japanese authorities.

The number of people who had lost their Japanese nationality by acquiring the nationality of another country and notified or reported it in accordance with the provisions of Article 103 or 105 of the Family Registration Act.Â
