U.S. number of residents in nursing homes 2015-2024

As of 2024, there were around 1.2 million residents in nursing homes across the United States. Nursing home resident numbers dropped from over 1.3 million in 2020 to less than 1.1 million in 2021. Numbers have been slowly recovering since then, but have not returned to pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels. The states with the highest number of residents in certified nursing facilities were, by far, California and New York.
