Greenhouse gas emissions from the agri-food system were estimated at around 16 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2021. Almost half of the systems emissions came from sources within the farmgate, with enteric fermentation the biggest polluter in this subcategory. However, the largest overall source of agri-food system emissions is net forest conversion, i.e., the clearing of natural forests to use the land for purposes such as growing crops or creating pasture for cattle.
