EV sales in Finland by leading brands 2023
Electric vehicle sales in Finland saw significant growth in 2023, with Volvo and Tesla leading the charge. Both brands surpassed 6,000 new registrations, solidifying their positions at the top of the market. This surge in EV adoption reflects a broader trend in the Nordic country, where the number of battery-electric passenger cars on Finnish roads reached approximately 83,800 by the end of the year.
Brand dominance and market dynamics
While Volvo claimed the top spot for overall EV sales, Tesla maintained its stronghold in the battery-electric vehicle segment. Tesla registered over 6,100 new vehicles in 2023, outpacing competitors like Volkswagen, which saw around 3,300 new registrations. The Tesla Model Y emerged as the best-selling electric car model in Finland, surpassing the Škoda Enyaq by more than 2,400 units. This success contributed to Tesla's position as the most common brand in the Finnish battery-electric vehicle fleet, with approximately 20,900 cars on the road.
Diverse market segments and consumer preferences
The Finnish EV market shows a clear distinction between battery-electric and plug-in hybrid preferences. While Tesla dominated the battery-electric segment, Volvo led in plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales. Nearly 4,000 new Volvo PHEVs were registered in 2023, with BMW and Mercedes-Benz following as the only other brands to exceed 2,000 units. This trend is further reflected in the overall PHEV fleet, where Volvo boasted over 29,600 vehicles in traffic use, followed again by BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
