In 2023, type A hospitals only made up two percent of the total hospitals in Indonesia. Meanwhile, type C hospitals accounted for 53 percent of the total hospitals in Indonesia.
The classification of hospitals in Indonesia is as follows:
Type A hospitals have very complete medical facilities and resources. Type A hospitals are also often referral centers for Type B, C, and D hospitals. This type of hospital is usually located in big cities or national capitals, where the patient population and medical needs are very high. Type A hospitals have at least 18 general practitioners, 4 dentists, and 6 specialists.
Type B hospitals have more limited facilities and resources than type A hospitals, but are still capable of providing reasonably good medical care. Type B hospitals are usually located in larger cities and regions, and serve a wider patient population than type C and D hospitals. Type B hospitals typically have 12 general practitioners, 3 dentists, and 3 specialists.
Type C hospitals have simpler facilities and a more limited number of beds than type A and B hospitals. They are usually located in smaller areas and serve a more limited patient population. This type of hospital can still provide basic care, treat patients with common illnesses, and refer patients who need further treatment to type A or B hospitals. Type C hospitals have 9 general practitioners, 2 dentists, and 2 specialists.
Type D hospitals have very limited medical facilities and resources, and may only have a few beds and basic medical services. These hospitals are usually located in very remote rural areas and serve very limited patient population. They provide emergency care, treat patients with common illnesses, and refer patients who need advance care to type A, B, or C hospitals. Type D hospitals usually have 4 general practitioners, 1 dentists, and 1 specialists.
