According to a survey conducted in September 2023, 70 percent of female respondents aged 15 to 19 years old stated that they preferred to be feminine, the highest share among women in Japan. For men, the share who desired to act masculine was highest among the oldest age group.

Original question: "Please select the answers that are closest to your opinion regarding masculinity and femininity. Male respondents: I prefer to be masculine; female respondents: I prefer to be feminine."
Respondents were given the choices to answer with: "very much applies," "somewhat applies," "somewhat does not apply," and "does not apply at all." The survey displays the share of respondents who answered "very much applies" and "somewhat applies."
