The Chinese province of Shanxi produced nearly 1.1 billion metric tons of coal in 2023, thereby achieving the largest volume of coal produced in a single province or state of a country worldwide. In comparison, the federal state of Saxony, Germany, produced 22 million metric tons of coal during that year.
