Global carbon dioxide emissions from air transportation were estimated at 820 million metric tons (MtCO₂) in 2023, an increase of roughly 20 percent from the previous year. Around 60 percent of global aviation emissions came from international flights that year. Air transportation emissions have been rising annually since the dramatic reductions observed in 2020, which were caused by the outbreak of COVID-19.

The database provides measures of CO₂ emissions on a territory basis, which is used for reporting in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) inventories. The emissions are estimated for 186 countries by the OECD, based on a consistent methodology across countries.
