The vast majority of challenges experienced by private equity (PE) firms implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) in Europe were related to transparency. Over 60 percent of PE firms felt that stakeholder expectations were unclear, additionally almost 90 percent of firms felt data made available from portfolio companies was limited. The scale of ESG related regulatory activities was also seen as a major theme, as 63 percent of firms felt ESG reporting was a high burden and 21 percent of PE firms felt there were too many regulations to follow.

Survey participants consisted of 20 leading private equity firms across Europe, representing 30 percent of private equity assets under management in Europe.
